Travel: Trusted Traveler Programs

Hello!

I wanted to let you guys know about Trusted Traveler Programs. I know of 4, and they each have a specific benefit to it.

How to choose which one benefits you the most:

TSA Pre- I primarily fly within the U.S.

Global Entry- I fly within the U.S. and internationally

Nexus- I primarily travel between the U.S. and Canada

Sentri- I primarily travel by land into the U.S. from Mexico

You can apply for all these programs here: www.dhs.gov/tt

Here is the list:

First!!!

Program: TSA Pre

This is from the Transportation Security Administration

Eligibility Required: U.S. Citizens and U.S. lawful permanent residents

Application Fee: $85 for 5 year membership

Passport Required: No

Application Process: Pre-enroll online, visit enrollment center; provide fingerprints and verify ID.

What you get out of this: TSA Pre expedited screening at participating airports

Second!!!

Program: Global Entry

This is from the U.S. Customs and Border Protection

Eligibility Required: U.S. Citizens and U.S. lawful permanent residents and citizens of certain other countries

Application Fee: $100 for 5 year membership

Passport Required: Yes; or lawful permanent resident card

Application Process: Pre-enroll online, visit enrollment center; provide fingerprints and verify ID.

What you get out of this: Expedited processing through CBP at airports and land borders upon arrival in the U.S. This also includes TSA Pre benefits!

Side Note: If you have lived a lot of different places, have two places you live at once, etc. you will get called in for an Interview like I did.

Third!!!

Program: Nexus

This is from the U.S. Customs and Border Protection

Eligibility Required: U.S. Citizens and U.S. lawful permanent residents, Canadian citizens and lawful permanent residents of Canada

Application Fee: $50 for 5 year membership

Passport Required: No

Application Process: Pre-enroll online, visit enrollment center for an interview; provide fingerprints and verify ID.

What you get out of this: Expedited processing at airports and land borders when entering the U.S. and Canada. Includes Global Entry benefits, TSA Pre for U.S. citizens, U.S. lawful permanent residents and Canadian citizens.

Side Note: The Global Entry Benefits seem kind of strange for this. Nexus costs $50, instead of the $100 for Global Entry and you get more benefits. Something seems off about this. I have a meeting with them soon, and I will check into this.

Fourth!!!

Program: Sentri

This is from the U.S. Customs and Border Protection

Eligibility Required: Proof of citizenship and admissibility documentation.

Application Fee: $122.25 for 5 year membership

Passport Required: No

Application Process: Pre-enroll online, visit enrollment center; provide fingerprints and verify ID.

What you get out of this: Expedited processing through CBP at airports and land borders.  Includes Global Entry and TSA Pre benefits for U.S. citizens and U.S. lawful permanent residents.

These programs are designed to make travel easier for you. I applied for Global Entry to make things easier for me, although I did get chosen for an interview. Can you say day trip to Washington DC??? You of course could choose any of their centers they have on this website: www.dhs.gov/tt

Fun Travels!

Sincerely,
